Summary

Students will create a graphic organizer based on reading from their texts. Graphic organizers are a great way to help students visualize what the main theme is and how the concepts you teach are related to that theme.

Materials

  • textbooks
  • post-it notes (small ones)
  • large blank piece of construction paper
  • compasses or round objects
  • rulers

Instructional Procedures

Attachments

  1. Students should work with a partner.
  2. Have students draw a main circle that has "The Big Bang Theory" written in it. Explain that other circles will be drawn around the main one and topics that are related to the theme will be placed in them. Each smaller circle can contain linking circles also. Do not have students make the diagram until they have finished reading.
  3. Identify reading in your text that will help students understand the Big Bang Theory. Model how to read and make a post-it note of an important piece of information.
  4. Tell students which pages and paragraphs to read and write post-its for.
  5. To complete the graphic organizer have students do the reading individually and generate about 10 post-its each. They should discuss how the post-its will determine how many circles the graphic organizer needs and where they should be. They can and stick them on after they have drawn a circle for each.
