Time Frame
3 class periods of 60 minutes each
Summary
Students will read from a website about the 5 zones of the oceans and the changes that occur as depth increases. They will answer questions as they read. They will also create two ocean food webs using Inspirations software to model the flow of energy through an ocean ecosystem.
Materials
- computers with Internet access
- Inspiration software (food webs could also be handmade if your school does not have this software)
- student sheets
Instructional Procedures
- Reserve a computer lab for your students.
- Hand out the student sheets and read through the introduction and procedures with your students.
- If your students have not used Inspirations before you will probably want to use a projector to do a demonstration of the program.
- You will have to tell students how you want them to turn their food webs in. They can print them off or turn them in electronically.
Assessment Plan
Scoring Guide:
1. Students complete the data section using the assigned website……. 4
2. Students complete two different ocean food webs……. 4
3. Students complete the analysis and conclusion……… 4
Answers to questions:
- It gets colder, except at the bottom near vents, where it would be warmer.
- Add or take away blubber or fur.
- The amount of light decreases.
- The amount of pressure increases.
- The use of air bladders, flexible skeletons, etc.
