Summary

This lesson provides students with an opportunity to identify different types of hard and soft flooring through the use of magazine pictures and written descriptions of characteristics of each type.

Materials

For this lesson you will need the following materials:

  • an assignment sheet for each student
  • the note outline copied onto a transparency or whatever technology works best for you
  • interior magazines
  • white paper (8 1/2 x 11)

    Background for Teachers

Please be familiar with the information covered on the note outline--types of flooring, etc...

    Student Prior Knowledge

This lesson should act as an introduction of flooring types and styles for the students. No prior knowledge of flooring is necessary.

    Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to identify pictures of the different varieties of soft and hard flooring once they have completed this activity.

    Instructional Procedures

    • Hand out a copy of the assignment sheet to each student in the class. Go over the directions as a class, answering any questions as they arise.
    • Students should use interior magazines to find four pictures of different soft floor treatments and four pictures of different hard floor treatments. Differences in soft flooring could include texture, pile, construction, and fiber content--not just color. Differences in hard flooring could include ceramic tile, slate, hard wood, soft wood, etc...
    • Once they have located their pictures, students should then neatly mount each picture on a separate sheet of white paper, labeling them in black ink and block letters according to what type and what number it is (i.e..SOFT #1, SOFT #2).
    • When all pictures are professionally mounted, students should then answer the questions for each picture on the assignment sheet.
    • Students should then staple all their pictures in the correct order to their assignment sheet and hand it in.

      Assessment Plan

This assignment could be graded in the following manner:

      • 5 points per picture--based on whether it is correct, neatly labeled and neatly mounted
      • 1 point per question, per picture. Answers should be more than yes or no where required.
      • the assignment is then worth 80 points total
