In this 1945 classic, musicians Al and Sue play small clubs in New York, until Sue heads to L.A. seeking her lucky break. Realizing he can’t live without her, Al ditches his piano gig and hitchhikes his way across the country with marriage in view. Luckily for us, he gets a ride with the wrong driver and ends up on a long and twisty “Detour”.
Film noir strategies at play in “Detour” include voiceover narration, a femme fatale and the protagonist’s panicked tumble from a bit of bad luck to the worsening consequences of his own bad choices.
