Beat The Devil

Series info on UEN-TV

In “Beat the Devil” (1953), a pack of dubious characters angle to score access to uranium mines in East Africa. A spoof of taut thrillers like “Key Largo” (1948) and “The Maltese Falcon” (1941), this Humphrey Bogart vehicle was a joke that sailed past contemporary viewers, but 60+ years later, we can enjoy its campy humor. Gwendolyn (Jennifer Jones) and her husband Harry fall in with Billy (played by Bogart), his wife (Gina Lollobrigida) and a cagey quartet with criminal designs.

Tensions mount, the plot twists, and the steamship the characters take from Italy to Africa sinks. In addition to thwarting the criminals’ plans, the steamship’s role in the story gives UEN SciFi Friday a great excuse to invite you to learn more about a technology which revolutionized travel and helped shape the world we live in today.
