Long John Silver

Whatever happened to the scurvy rascal of Treasure Island? Hoist the sails and take to the high seas with Walt Disney’s “Long John Silver” (1954). Pirate Captain “El Toro” Mendoza kidnaps two children, Jim Hawkins and Elizabeth Strong. Unfortunately for him, Captain Silver is the one who steps in to deliver the ransom—and steal the ship and crew he needs to chase after more treasure.

Fans of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will notice similar plot points. They’ll also hear a strong resemblance between Robert Newton’s thick burr and Jeffrey Rush’s portrayal of Captain Barbossa. Newton’s performance was in fact so impactful, it helped define the pirate archetype in popular culture, including International Talk Like a Pirate Day.
