### The Number Crew - English 1 -2

Each program features an episode from a 3D animated soap opera, which is set on board the venerable luxury cruise ship the SS Mathematical. The human crew, Fiz, Flo, Bradley, Baby Bunting and their parents Ted and Mirabelle, look after the needs and whims of twenty charming but demanding animal passengers. In each episode, the Number Crew encounters a problem, which can only be solved by the application of mathematical knowledge and skills. The viewers are encouraged to join with The Number Crew in identifying the mathematical concept at the heart of the problem and developing the mental strategies and skills required to solve it, and sail on into untroubled waters.

• The Roller-Hockey Match
Friday, February 21
11:48 am on UEN-TV 9.1
The passengers form teams to play roller hockey. Fiz and Bradley are playing roller hockey with Flo as referee. The passengers would like to join in so Ted makes eight hockey sticks. The first game is rather unfair as the Tiger and Monkey are on one team and everyone else is on the other. The passengers pick teams properly and start playing again but Bradley says they must do some practice in pairs. Math: Understand the operation of division and the associated vocabulary.

Wednesday, February 19
11:48 am on UEN-TV 9.1
Some of the passengers are in luck and the others have nothing at all. Bradley writes out a neat list of treats for the passengers in two columns. The two smallest passengers come at the top and get one treat each and the two largest passengers come at the bottom of the columns and get ten treats each. Bradley and Flo start handing them out. But Fiz starts giving out treats too and when she's finished there are no treats left . Math: Know by heart doubles from 1+1 to 5+5; begin to know doubles from 6+6 to 10+10 and the corresponding halves

The Number Crew have to work out the prices of ice creams. Fiz is selling Big Digit ice creams for ten pence and the adding up is easy. Unfortunately Bradley arrives to tell her that the Big Digits are in fact nine pence, and that makes the sums much harder. They work out how to correct the mistake by counting back one. Math: Add nine by adding ten and adjusting by 1.

Just when the kids have got everything sorted the Crocodile chases Baby Bunting into the boxes and chews them all up. Looks like the Number Crew will have to do all that sorting again, but there are no more fives boxes so they start using tens boxes. Math: Begin to add a pair of single digit numbers, crossing ten.

The Number Crew has to clear up by filling up boxes. Mirabelle tells the kids they have to tidy up. The passengers help in their own way. Ted leaves them some boxes, which contain 5 things. Bradley reminds them they have to count how many they have all together but looking at the boxes he can see six and seven make thirteen straight away because five and five make ten then all you have to do is add the ones on top. Math: Partition and recombination - breaking numbers into five and a bit.

The passengers are allowed a number of sweets corresponding to their size. The Number Crew decides to give out some sweets. The number of sweets each animal gets depends on its size. Flo and Fiz hand out tickets with numbers on to each animal, and Bradley gives out the right number of sweets. Sadly the Tiger's 'six' gets ripped so it looks like a zero and Bradley can't give him any sweets. The Monkey comforts him and they discover that when they put their digits together they have a two digit number - 20 - and can claim lots more sweets. Math: Know what a 2-digit number represents

In which the Number Crew make a model of the island for old times' sake, and put on a puppet show. The animals are upset at leaving the island so the Number Crew decide to make a model island to cheer them up. Their models are all odd sizes though. They think of using their metre sticks but that would make everything too large: however, they notice the smaller markings on the ruler and decide to use those. Math: Read a simple scale to the nearest labeled division, including using a ruler to draw and measure lines to the nearest centimeter.

In which the Number Crew and the animals weigh food for the beach party. The animals want to have a party before they leave and of course that means having to sort out the food. Some comes from the store and some Mirabelle finds on the island, checking that it is safe in her book. They see they can share the food out into equal portions by using the penguin's surf board as a scale. Math: Estimate, measure and compare masses using standard units.

• Setting Up Camp
Wednesday, January 8
11:48 am on UEN-TV 9.1
In which the Number Crew and the animals set up camp on the island. Everybody likes the island so much now that they want to stay for a night or two. That means they'll need tents to sleep in. They get together some driftwood, canvas and ropes but they need to measure the animals to get all the tents the right size. Math: Estimate, measure and compare lengths, using standard units

• Exploring The Island
Tuesday, January 7
11:48 am on UEN-TV 9.1
In which the Number Crew and the Animals explore the island. The animals are a bit nervous about exploring a wild island, even the Lion, so Mirabelle suggests a Number Hunt and a picnic to get everybody used to the island. Bradley is helping the Monkey and Tiger with a dividing problem and explains how it's done. Flo is helping the Penguin and Polar Bear: she explains the sum to them and they get the answer, eventually. Math: Explain how a sum is solved

• Landing on the Island
Monday, January 6
11:48 am on UEN-TV 9.1
In which the SS Mathematical finally makes a landing. Ted has to do a tiny operation on the crocodile, who's been eating furniture again, but he has the tools and sorts it out. Suddenly Mirabelle calls to say they've spotted an island. They have to get ready for the landing and each member of the crew has their own job. Bradley has to work out how many humans and animals are going ashore. Math: Choose and use appropriate number operations and ways of calculating to solve problems

In which Baby Bunting runs a Holiday Club for the Number Bugs Everyone is helping Baby Bunting set up his club for the Number Bugs, but he wants his customers to come in groups of ten rather than groups of two. Bradley is traumatized because he realizes the two times table is no longer much help. Math: Use knowledge of Number Facts and place value to multiply or divide mentally.

In which the Number Crew run the Holiday Club. Sorting out in the stores Ted comes across his old saxophone and the children get the idea of holding a Holiday Club, but they have to plan carefully. Ted is on hand with his tool box and the Hippo and Moose are the practice customers. Tickets are five pence and the customers will be coming in two at a time. Math: Know by heart the multiplication facts for the two times table and derive quickly the corresponding division facts

• The Trouble with Doubles
Wednesday, January 1
11:48 am on UEN-TV 9.1
In which the Number Crew discover that two is not always twice as nice as one. Bradley reads a night-time story about Noah's Ark then falls asleep to dream that something very strange has happened on the ship. Everybody has a double, but the doubles aren't nice, in fact they are horrid, the total opposite to the normal passengers and crew. Math: Understand and use the principle that doubling reverses halving (doubling is the inverse of halving).
