Importance of Families 5: Family Crest

Summary:
Students will create a family crest based on several unique qualities in their families.

Materials:
Examples of family crests, family crest taken from Unit Packet, markers and/or colored pencils

Background For Teachers:
In previous lessons we have discussed the importance of family in several areas including: parents, traditions, extended family, and sibling rivalry.

Student Prior Knowledge:
Students should have participated in the first four lessons in the Unit to be successful in this activity.

Intended Learning Outcomes:
Students will be able to discuss, describe and illustrate factors that make his/her family unique.

Instructional Procedures:
Introduction: (5 minutes)
Students will discuss the most interesting things learned from the parent panel. Students will also sign "thank you" cards that are passed around.

Activity: (remainder of class)
Today is family crest day. Each student will create his or her own family crest. Show students examples of family crests that you have brought and explain key points about each crest.

In your Unit Packet you will find a blank family crest that you will use to draw your own personal crest. Each crest should be divided into four sections, with each section representing one idea about your family.

Ideas might include: flag from country of origin, foods that match ethnicity, pictures that represent last name, celebrations, traditions, etc.

Students will have entire class period to work so nothing sloppy will be accepted. Encourage them to be creative and have fun!

Before class is over, if some students are finished have them share their crest with the class. All students should clean up their workspace. Packets are due tomorrow for end of unit grade. Send signed thank you cards home with the respective students whose parents came to help with parent panel.

Strategies For Diverse Learners:
This is an activity that would be good to let diverse learners take home and finish with parents.

Extensions:
Gifted students might want to research the family crest for their surname and do an extra credit report on what the origin and meaning of the crest.

Assessment Plan:
Students may be given a teacher generated end of unit test.
