Summary: Students learn how to accomplish basic sewing procedures such as: measuring (using a cutting board with a grid), cutting using a rotary cutter, and sewing a straight line.
Main Curriculum Tie: FACS Exploration Standard 20.0101-04 Objective 20.0101-0402 Follow safety standards when using and identifying small sewing equipment: scissors/shears, rotary cutter and mat board, pins, hand needles, seam gauge, tape measure, seam riper, and iron. National Standard 16.4.1 Materials: fabric, rotary cutters, cutting mats, sewing machines
Background For Teachers: Basic sewing skills.
Student Prior Knowledge: Threading the sewing machine and basic operating knowledge of the machine. Intended Learning Outcomes: Students will learn how to cut fabric into squares to a common size, use the mat boards and rotary cutters, sew a straight line and backstitch. Instructional Procedures: 1. Complete a demonstration showing students how to use the rotary cutter and mat boards to measure their squares.
2. Show the students a complete example of what they are going to be making.
3. Hand out the instruction sheet (attached) and fabric and let the students get started.
4. Monitor students' progress and provide assistance as needed.
Attachments
Strategies For Diverse Learners: Gifted students can be assigned to sew completed projects together to create a quilt top.
Struggling students should be assigned less squares to cut out and sew.
Assessment Plan: When student hand in their project and instruction sheet, 3 points are given for each step that has been completed satisfactorily and checked off.
