Summary: Fluency is developed as students read, reread and memorize poems. Students will present poems to the class.
Main Curriculum Tie: English Language Arts Grade 5 Speaking and Listening Standard 6 Adapt speech to a variety of contexts and tasks, using formal English when appropriate to task and situation. Materials: Poetry books that can be read and shared by students.
Background For Teachers: Determine requirements that students will need to meet. (e.g. How often will you meet? How long will the poems be?)
Student Prior Knowledge: Students need to have extensive listening and reading experience with a variety of poetry and songs. Instructional Procedures:
- Teacher prepares and presents a poem or song modeling expectations for students.
- Students read poetry in small groups and each individual chooses a poem or song to present to the class.
- Each student memorizes a song or a poem.
- Each student will take his / her turn sitting the "presenter's" chair in front of a half circle of students and present their poem or song.
Extensions: This activity could be extended to presentations for a parent day at school.
Assessment Plan: You may choose to create a use a rubric to assess student presentation.
