Instructional Procedures

Websites

See Salt Lake School District - Big Six© Overview Show students sample poster. Explain to students that they are going to share what they learned about their animal by making a poster to be displayed. They will make posters about their animals by using the information from their notes to write their final report. Show students transparency of final report form. Using the notes on transparency from previous lesson, demonstrate for children how they will put the information in complete sentences in the appropriate section on the final report form. (Modeling) Have students practice making complete sentences from the overhead note card as you write on the final report form. (Guided Practice) Give each student a final report form and have them complete it using their notes. Students will draw a picture of their animal on 'Wanted' Poster. Students will make a poster by mounting final report form and picture onto a piece of construction paper. Refer to Big Six© chart and review what they did at each step:

1. Task Definition - assignment clarification; web or list of questions to answer

2. Information Seeking Strategies - looked at 2 gorilla books and decided which gave us the best information

3. Location and Access - learned what area of library had appropriate books for our information needs

4. Use of Information - read, listened and took notes

5. Synthesis - made a poster to present what was learned

6. Evaluation - looking at the procedure we used and the final product Tell students that it is important to know if the job was done well and what they would do differently next time. Have students look at their own posters and ask themselves the following questions:

a)Refer back to web or list of questions and ask, 'Did I answer each question' (go through each question on web)

b)'Does my poster look neat and attractive?'
