Students will be able to identify the purposes of an engagement, marital goals and objectives, the signals of potential marital problems, and the purposes of the honeymoon.

Instructional Procedures:
Introduction/Pre-Assessment
Have each student write down on a piece of paper how they would describe their "dream engagement." After everyone is finished, collect them all and read them out loud. Have the class vote on the best engagement. The engagement with the most votes gets a prize (sucker, pencil, etc.)

Read the book Horton Hatches the Egg, by Dr. Seuss, ISBN 0-394-80077-X. Ask students why they think you read this book to introduce a lesson on building a marriage relationship. They may come up with a variety of answers. The primary reason for reading this book is to stress the commitment that Horton has to the egg. Commitment is a vital component of a marriage relationship.

Content Outline, Activities and Teaching Strategies
(All options do not necessarily need to be taught. Select ones to cover standards and objectives and according to your district policies.)

Option 1: Assignment on Marital Goals and Objectives
Discuss as a class or in groups the importance and "why's" of setting goals as a couple before and during marriage.

Option 2: Engagement and Honeymoon
Have the students fill out the Engagement and Honeymoon Student Lecture Guide (pdf) as you present the Engagement and Honeymoon PowerPoint Presentation and Honeymoon Lecture Guide (pdf).

Option 3: Marriage Cost Assignment
This can be done individually or as groups, or in pairs. Have each student include all of the required topics in their folder/binder. Use the boys' worksheet (pdf) and the girls' worksheet (pdf).

Option 4: Marital Risks
Discuss as a class the different things that will have an effect on whether or not a marriage will last. Use the Teacher Information on Marital Risks (pdf).

Option 5: How to Make a Budget
Using the budget teacher information (pdf) have the students create a pretend budget for when they plan to be married with planned income, expenses and prices. Then give the students a "Surprise" to their budget and have them see how their "Surprise" affected their budget.

Option 6: Role of Emotions When Making Financial Decisions
Have a class discussion on the importance of the role of emotions when making financial decisions as related to marriage.
