Summary: This is an introduction to food & nutrition careers, and skills needed to be successful in these careers.
There is also an evaluation for the end of the unit.
Main Curriculum Tie: Career and Technical Education Introduction Standard 6 Objective 6-3 Demonstrate basic skills related to nutrition, food preparation, and clothing and textiles. Career Connections: - entrepreneur

Materials: video clips, pictures, or objects related to foods & nutrition careers.
Background For Teachers: FOOD & NUTRITION CAREERS-- Job Description: grow and produce food, prepare and package food, transport and sell food, keep food safe, and clean up. Job Skills include: working with your hands, working with tools, working together, quality work, time management, creativity, and school skills (math, reading, science, and art, etc.).
Career Pathways: Food Science, Dietetics & Nutrition, Food Service & Culinary Arts, Hospitality Services, Biotechnology, Production/Processing, and Marketing.
Related FACS classes: FACS exploration, Food and Nutrition 1 & 2, and Pro-start.
Student Prior Knowledge: This is an introduction to form the groundwork, and get kids excited about what they will be learning. This is also a good time to preassess and decide what the students need to know. Students need experiences to be able to evaluate how they liked what they learned. Intended Learning Outcomes: Students will recognize types of jobs and skills needed in a food and nutrition career.
They will evaluate their experience, what they learned, and how it can help them in real life.
Students will connect skills they enjoy with possible careers.
Students will list what classes they can take to learn more. This is the time to make your other programs shine! Instructional Procedures: Show the powerpoint. Explain new words and how they will be used later in class. Show brief examples or tell personal stories of people in careers, and what they do. Give examples why each skill is important, especially stressing the importance of math, reading, math, and science. After the unit is over, take 5-10 minutes to have students fill out the evaluation. Discuss related career pathways, and other educational opportunities.

Strategies For Diverse Learners: Show a video or pictures of food related careers. Or invite a guest speaker. Have a student dress up in a chef hat and coat (or apron).
Serve a healthy treat.
Extensions: This can be used as part of the agriculture and health requirements.
Assessment Plan: Read career evaluations to see what students learned.
