The Water Cycle - The Heat Is On!

What do you think of when you hear the word temperature? In science, temperature is a measure of how fast particles move in a substance. Scientists measure temperature in degrees Celsius.

Temperature of IceHow does the air around you feel right now? If the room you are in is too hot or too cold, it makes you uncomfortable. Most people feel good when the temperature is about 70°F. The temperature may get to 100°F on a very hot day and the temperature may be near 0°F on a freezing, cold day. Time to put on your coat!

Water is also affected by the amount of heat energy it contains. For example, if water loses enough heat energy it will freeze. Water that freezes has changed from a liquid state to a solid state.

TRY IT

Take a thermometer and place the bottom of it against an ice cube for a few minutes. Record the temperature. Next, hold the thermometer in a cup of water from a fountain and record the temperature. Did you notice that the temperature of water is lower as a solid than as a liquid?
