Matter - Don't Let Your Colors Run!
Background:
Scientists use their five senses (smell, sight, touch, taste, hearing)
to make observations. They also use scientific equipment (microscopes,
balances, graduated cylinders) to make more exact observations.
In this lab, you will use your senses (except taste) and scientific equipment
to make observations and then use your observations to make predictions
about density.
Materials:
(Instructions to prepare the liquids)
- Liquid A (Red)
- Liquid B (Blue)
- Liquid C (Clear)
- Graduated cylinder
- Balance
- Thermometers
- Safety goggles
- Paper towels or cloths (clean up)
- Beakers
- Stirring rods
Procedure:
- Predict which liquid is the most dense and which is the least dense.
- Make and record observations using your senses (except taste) and scientific equipment.
- Record your observations about which liquid is the most dense and which is the least dense.
- Add 10 mL of each liquid to a graduated cylinder.
- Record the results (what was the order of the liquid layers).
- Try adding the liquids to the graduated cylinder in different orders. Check your results!
Safety concerns:Be sure to follow all chemical,
and glassware safety rules
that are specified by your teacher in all general laboratory experiences.
Analysis:
- Which liquid was most dense?
- Which liquid was least dense?
- By adding the liauids in different orders, was the layering affected?
- Did you correctly predict the densities of the liquids?
