Earth's Structure - How Many Licks Does it Take to Get to the Center?

Earth's Water

The second layer encountered when investigating Earth is the water.  Water does not cover Earth's entire surface, but covers approximately three-fourths of it.  Water is one of the few molecules that is found in all three states (solid, liquid, and gas) on Earth.  Water is more dense than the atmosphere (although water is found in the atmosphere as a gas), but less dense than crust and interior layers.  (Some water is found in the crust and interior.) Although there is a lot of water on Earth, only a small fraction is available for drinking.
