Scientists place things in categories based on their external structures. Determining how to group things is called classification. Below are photographs of some non-living things. Drag the answers to sort them based on whether they are hard or soft. When you finish, highlight the box at the bottom of the page and see if you are correct!

1. Ice Cubes
2. Water
3. Snow
4. Glass
5. Quartz
6. Clouds
1. Hard, 2. Soft, 3. Soft, 4. Hard, 5. Hard, 6. Soft

Analysis:

  1. Besides hard and soft, what other ways can you think of that could be used to divide non-living things into two groups?
  2. What non-living objects that would be difficult to classify based on hard and soft?
