Unit I - Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Pre-Assessment

Introduce this unit with a question/discussion.  Ask the students to describe a most memorable meal.  Ask the question, "Why was it memorable?"  Use the question to generate a discussion about the psychological dimensions of eating such as cravings, good feelings created by certain foods, eating in front of the TV, etc.

Discuss the statement: "Some people say that they don't just eat to live; they live to eat."  Ask the students what the statement means to them.

NOTE:  A variation could be to put the questions on large note cards and divide the students into groups, allowing discussion to go on in a small group setting.  Follow the small groups with a large group teacher/student discussion of small group ideas and input.
