Summary: Students will read excerpts from Homer's Odyssey and use the information to recognize choices in their own life's odyssey, as well as the lives of others.
Materials: Excerpts of Homer's Odyssey (available in most ninth grade literature books)

Background For Teachers: Knowledge of Homer's Odyssey
Intended Learning Outcomes: Students will research and write a biographical essay focusing on the major turning points in that person's odyssey through life. Instructional Procedures: As a class, discuss the importance of the choices people make.
Read excerpts from Homer's Odyssey.
Discuss the significance of the choices Odysseus made in his journey.
Students will select a historical figure to research.
Students will research their selected figure, focusing on choices (turning points) in that persons life.
Students will outline their essays.
Students will write their essays.
Extensions: Rather than writing about a famous person, students could write about themselves, a friend or relative, or a fictional character, such as a Greek god.
Assessment Plan: Students could share their writing with each other and do peer evaluations.
