Endangered Animals (Lesson 3 - Use of Information - Grade 3)

Summary

In this Big Six© lesson, students will select a topic (an endangered animal) and take notes from a nonfiction source on that topic (copyrighted by Salt Lake City School District).


Materials

Books from Rourke Discovery Library; 'Gorillas' from Rourke Discovery Library for LMT to model process


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will:

1. Select an endangered animal.

2. Take notes on a note page.


Instructional Procedures

Websites

Review with students the objective of today's lesson as stated in the 'Intended Learning Outcomes'. See Salt Lake School District - Big Six© Overview Put transparency from Lesson 2 on overhead for all students to see. Point out that the questions are on the left and the information is on the right. Pass out one book per group of students. Pass out one note page and pencil per student. Using 'Gorillas' from Rourke Discovery Library and transparency of blank note card, model writing name and topic at the top and author and title at the bottom. Have students fill in this information from their books. Read through 'Gorillas' and model notetaking on blank note page on overhead (Save for next lesson). Students take turns reading from their book and all students take notes on their own note page . Have each group share one thing they found out about their animal. Refer students to Big Six chart and say, 'Today we completed step four of the Big Six© process'.
