Background for Teachers

Teachers need to become familiar with the Apps iTellastory and iLiveMath Africa. Students should have a basic understanding of the operations of addition and subtraction.

Student Prior Knowledge

Experience with addition and subtraction under 20. Students should have a good understanding of the processes of addition and subtraction through the use of manipulative and pictures.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to relate the processes of addition and subtraction to real life situations through the creation and sharing of their original story problems.

Instructional Procedures

Teacher uses iLiveMath Africa to show students various story problems using real world creatures. Students will use manipulatives or pictures to solve the problems being presented in iLiveMath. Teachers encourage students to discover various strategies (manipulatives, pictures, movement, etc.) to solve the problems presented. Teacher and students analyse and discuss the problems being presented to find elements that will help them understand which operation is appropriate to use to solve the problem. Such as less, more, less than, all together, left. After students have a good working understanding of the operations and strategies, the class will generate a list of problem solving strategies to use. In small groups, using the App iTellastory, students will create their own story problems on real world situatons.
