Summary

Students will use several mobile apps to analyze elements of a fairy tale.


Materials

iPad/iPod Touch, "A Novel Idea" app, "FlixLab" app, or other story-building and multimedia apps. Copies of fairy tales for students to read or have them downloaded in digital form onto iPads/iPods


Background for Teachers

Teachers can find the free apps in the App Store. (Teachers may use other applicable apps). Free fairy tale stories can be found through various sources (e.g. iBooks, Project Gutenberg).


Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to understand how to use the apps and have a working understanding of the components of a short story.


Intended Learning Outcomes

The students will develop fluency in analysis of fairy tale literature.


Instructional Procedures

1. Put students into small groups, of 3 or 4. 2. Assign fairy tale readings to groups for jigsaw activity. 3. Have students identify, and record using "A Novel Idea" app, the components of the story: title, characters, setting/location, theme, tone, point of view, premise, conflict, and plot. 4. Using the "FlixLab" app, students will create a short multimedia presentation of their analysis findings. 5. Students will show their multimedia presentation to the whole class.
