Summary

STORY STRETCHERS or EXTENSIONS are used to reinforce a story. They can include a variety of activities that are DAP for young children. The story stretchers can be included in various learning centers in child care centers and preschools. This was one of my students' favorite activities!


Materials

LCD Projector and computer, books, paper, crayons, markers.


Intended Learning Outcomes

In small groups (3-4 students), the students will create a story stretcher activity for a children's book.

DAY 1

  • Students will complete the student guide as they watch the power point. Examples of story stretchers will be show in the power point. Other examples can be created and used.
  • Students will get into groups or 3-4 and select a book to use. A book may not be used by more than one group per class period (first come - first pick!).
  • As a group, the students will plan and create their story stretcher.

DAY 2

  • Work day for the students to create project.

DAY 3

  • Read story to class
  • Share completed project.
  • Give the student guide and BLACK-LINE original to the teacher. (These originals may be copied and shared with the whole class.)


Assessment Plan

Assessment for this unit will be the Story Stretcher project each group completes.
