Summary

This lesson is part 2 of "It's been a long time!" Students will practice orally by telling about the given famous people. To make this discussion meaningful to each student, the students are required to observe the information about these people from WebQuest before the class. For this lesson plan I used Productivity tools to evaluate my students. They will write a short biography of an interesting person in their families or of a celebrity.

Instructional Procedures

Attachments

> Pre-activity: Hidden Secret. 5-7 minutes. The whole class participates. The students go around the classroom and try to find people who did the things described on their handouts by asking questions. > Activity # 1. Group work. 10 minutes. Pictures of John F. Kennedy, Marilyn Monroe, and Mahatma Gandhi are displayed on the screen. The students discuss who these people are and what they know about them. The teacher asks questions: Who are they? Where were they born? What did they do before they become famous? What are some of the important things they did during their lives? What do people remember them for? > Activity # 2. Pair work. 15 minutes. The students listen to information on audiotape and take notes. Taking turns in pairs each student chooses one of the people they have been talking about and talk about his or her life. > Activity # 3. Pair work. 15 minutes. The students read a passage about Hoang Nhu Tran and think about a title for the passage. The students put a cover over the passage and tell to each other how many things they remember about Hoang Nhu Tran. The next question they discuss: How do you explain the success of people like Hoang Nhu Tran? > Activity # 4. Individual work. 20-17 minutes. The students type on the computers (using productivity tools) a short biography of an interesting person in their families (e.g., a grandparent, an aunt, or uncle) or of a celebrity (they can choose a person that has been discussed during this class).

Strategies for Diverse Learners

In activity #1 gifted students lead the discussion and increase other students' knowledge about the given people. In activity #3 disabled or retarded students may have a problem with finishing reading on time. The teacher may assign pairs where gifted and special needs students work together. The teacher may assign to a special needs student to read only a part of the passage and ask a gifted student to tell the rest of the story in his or her own words. Both students will benefit from this kind of work. Activity #4 is creative. Here gifted students are not limited in their potential. For disabled students if necessary assistive technology products may be used. To ease the typing process for such students devices such as IntellKeys or Co:Writer can be used depending on specific problems the students have.
