7 class periods of 60 minutes each
Small Groups
Thinking & Reasoning
The students should be able to name notes and gain a musical vocabulary through practice with worksheets and use of technology.
Music note and term flash cards, worksheets, computer games, overhead projector, recordings that pertain to terms learned, Microsoft word or any word program, paper (music staff paper if available also), and pencils.
Teachers need a working knowledge of music and terms.
Students should learn the note names of the grand staff and learn basic musical terms. Prepares them to read music. Helps build their technology skills.
Use each day's topic and plan a detailed lesson plan according to the needs and level of the class. Prepare worksheets that incorporate the lesson. Have stations set up for small groups of students to rotate through. Stations can include: note flash cards, term flash cards, computer games, finishing worksheets, and oral application of terms (i.e. sing Mary had a Little Lamb staccato). There final project of the lesson is to make their own worksheet for someone else to fill out and the teacher corrects.
I like the small group idea. It can help the diverse learners to help the students that are behind. Students can "be the teacher" so the teacher can help others. The only station that the small group cannot help each other is finishing the worksheets.
You can use any two musical concepts for this lesson plan, such as rhythm and intervals.
The students will be tested upon the knowledge that they should have remembered during music time. The students will also be assessed by review worksheets passed out at the beginning of class. The teacher can informally assess the students while using the flash cards to see whether the student is understanding the content or not. The computer game can used formally by writing the scores down on a page.
