2 class periods of 60 minutes each
Individual
Students will identify and use the following fashion terms: fashion, fad, style, classic, design, trend, and avant-garde.
1. Fashion Term Overhead Definitions or Powerpoint 2. Fashion Terms Assignment 3. Magazines
Vocabulary:
Fashion - the currently accepted, prevailing style. (Vogue is defined the same way.)
Fad - a fashion that suddenly bursts into popularity
Style - a characteristic or distinctive form of dress that exists independent of fashion (hippie, gothic, cowboy)
Classic - a fashion that retains general acceptance over an extended period of time
Design - a specific version of a style
Avant-garde - ahead of its time, comes straight off the runway
Lecture: Discuss each vocabulary word and show pictures, if available, to portray each term.
A trend is always changing and is related to fads. It is a comparison with the previous year or years. Fashion trends usually span 3-7 year cycles.
Discuss with the class different trends and fads that have been popular since they were in grade school.
Assign students to find a picture to illustrate each fashion term.
Students will identify common fashion terms. Students will use fashion terms in written descriptions and portfolios throughout the rest of the course.
1. Discuss the vocabulary words using Powerpoint. Also, have students look through magazines as you discuss each term and find a picture that illustrates that term.
2. Assign the Fashion Term Assignment.
Students knowledge of Fashion Terms will be assessed through the evaluation of the Fashion Terms Assignment, and a written quiz.
