Background For Teachers:
The textbook used is, "Strengthening Family and Self" published by Goodheart-Willcox.
Intended Learning Outcomes:
FACTORS LEADING TO DIVORCE: finances, selfishness, communication problems, etc. may lead to divorce.
EFFECTS OF DIVORCE ON FAMILY MEMBERS: common reactions of children to divorce include: increased tardiness at school, lower self-concepts, display of delinquent acts, being less sociable, being labeled as a problem child, and having fewer friends, the fear of abandonment is the most common effect of divorce on a preschooler, the fear of failing in his/her own relationships is the most common effect of divorce on an adolescent. PERSONAL ADJUSTMENTS TO DIVORCE: divorce can be a relief for children if it stops the fighting or arguments in the home, most single parents face a reduction in the economics level, have less personal time, and must deal with child care issues. COPING METHODS: to help children cope - consistent visitation, economic stability, stable relationships, utilize the steps of the grieving process, the school and community counseling resources, and the support of friends and family, things parents should remember - divorced parents should not place blame on the ex-spouse in front of the children; the younger the children, the more time it will take to adjust to the loss; young children will often believe that their parents will get back together again; children still love both of their parents.
