Thinking & Reasoning
This lesson provide students with an artistic opportunity to create an example of each of the different types of rhythm.
Please be familiar with the five different types of rhythm: repetition, gradation, transition, opposition, and radiation. For more detail on each type of rhythm, refer to the attached note outline.
Students should be aware of the purpose of the principles of design--the guidelines to follow in using the elements of design most effectively.
Students will create and identify each of the five types of rhythm.
Have students take out their notes from previous discussions. Put the rhythm notes outline on the overhead projector. Go over all information as a class, discuss and elaborate where you find it necessary. Answer any questions as they arise. Visual examples of the different types of rhythm may be helpful for the students to understand more fully what you are talking about.
Pass out an assignment sheet to each student. Go over all directions as a class. Show an example of what has been done in the past and what can be done. Assure them that as long as the five types of rhythm are correctly represented and they have done a neat, presentable job, whatever creative idea they come up with to represent the rhythm types is acceptable! Remind them once again that neatness is very important. Turn the rest of the class time over to them to complete the task.
Struggling students should be reminded that simple compositions are fully acceptable as long as they are correct and neat.
Refer to the attached assignment sheet for assessment specifics such as point values and breakdowns.
