Background for Teachers

This is a daily activity taking five minutes or less per day. Be sure to measure the temperature at the same time each day; around noon is the best. At the beginning of the month, it will require a little more time to fill out the calendar. At the end of the month, extra time will be needed to do the final analysis.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Intended Learning Outcomes
5. Understand and use basic concepts and skills.
6. Communicate clearly in oral, artistic, written, and nonverbal form.

Process Skills
Observation, prediction, data collection

Instructional Procedures

Invitation to Learn
Tell students that they are going to be weather forecasters. They are going to record and track weather patterns through the year, and make predictions about the weather like real weather forecasters.

Instructional Procedures

  • Beginning of the month: Fill in the calendar.
  • Daily: Measure the temperature at the same time each day. Have the students graph the temperature. Find the temperature on the left side of the graph. Use the edge of a piece of paper to track across. Find the correct day. Color up to the paper. Then, record on a calendar what the weather is that day: sunny, cloudy, windy,
    rainy, or snowy.
  • End of the month: Analyze the weather data. Answer questions using that information. Also, have them draw a picture of themselves depicting what kinds of clothes they wore that month: shorts, heavy coats, light jackets, etc. Finally, draw a picture of their tree. What does it look like? Does it have leaves? What color are they?

Extensions

Have the students use the information from Monday through Friday to make reasonable predictions about the weather on Saturday and Sunday.

Family Connections
Have students track weather at home as well as at school. They could record low temperatures in the morning before school.

Assessment Plan

Can the students read a thermometer and calendar? Can they graph the temperature and read it?
