Student Prior Knowledge

  • This game will be most effective as a culminating activity for your homonym activities.
  • The students should have an understanding of what homonym words are and how even though they sound alike, they have different meanings and spellings.
  • This game shouldn't be played until the student has gone through these words in a variety of activities.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  1. Treat others with kindness and fairness.
  2. Include others in learning and play activities.
  3. Decode, read, and comprehend written text.

Instructional Procedures

Game Rules:

  1. Each student in the group will be dealt 10 homonym cards if there are 2 players and 7 cards if there are 3-4 players and 6 cards if there are 5-6 players.

  2. The remainder of the deck is placed in the middle and the top card is turned over to form a discard pile.

  3. As soon as they receive their cards, the students will check their cards to see if they have any pairs. (ex. meat and meet).

  4. In order to keep their pair, the student must use each homonym in a sentence correctly.

Ex. I will meet you after school on the playground. I will eat meat for dinner.

  5. The student must discard their pair of homonyms after sharing their sentences.

  6. Play continues as each student takes a turn by drawing a card from the deck or the discard pile.

  7. If the student can't successfully use the words in sentences, they must forfeit that pair to the discard pile.

  8. The games ends when one students has no cards left.

  9. The winner is the student with the most pairs.

Assessment Plan

Monitor how well each student is successfully creating sentences for the words. Reteach as needed.
