Summary

Students to use the GPS system to locate the ten most influential Utahns. Each Utahn is placed on the School campus with a geographic coordinate. When they find their assigned cache the students will divulge to the rest of the class their famous Utahan together with the main reason they are famous.


Materials

Websites

  • At least 10 gps units.
  • At least Ten plastic containers to put slips of paper in.
  • Ten names of famous Utahns and associated fact for their fame.

  • Intended Learning Outcomes

    Students to identify ten famous Utahns and why they are famous. What did they contribute to society?


    Instructional Procedures

    1. Place containers with names and associated facts around school campus. Mark locations with GPS and put coordinates in student GPS units.
    2. Divide students into ten groups of three.
    3. Hand each group a GPS system and explain how to use it.
    4. Have each group go find their famous Utahn.
    5. Each group to report to the class.
    6. Have matching assignment for students to complete.

    7. Extensions

      • Have students research their famous Utahn in the computer lab. Students should discover a fact about the person in their youth. Students should find a picture of their famous Utahn.
      • Have the students prepare their own list of their choices for "Ten most Influential Utahns" and give rational for their choices. Lists should contain no more than five persons from the teacher example.
