School Ground Map

Summary

Teacher and students will work together with community partners to create a map of the school grounds to share with new students and their parents to acquaint them with the school, areas where to play, off limit areas, and the various types of trees.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will use a GPS unit correctly to map the school groups. Students will then create a map using ArcGIS software. Students will label the map. Students will write and take pictures of their learning experience while creating a school ground map. Students will share their learning experience while creating their school ground map to other students and their parents. Student will present their map to other students and their parents.

Instructional Procedures

Students will be introduced to GPS using the Powerpoint presentation found at http://utah4h.org/htm/featured-programs/gps Students will learn how to mark and save waypoints with a GPS unit first in the classroom and then outside. Students will learn how to use a digital camera. They will then take pictures of the play areas, trees, and off limit areas of the school grounds as they mark these areas as waypoints. Students will learn how to use ArcGIS software to create a map of their school grounds. Students will add the waypoints on their map. Students will label the waypoints on their map. Students will add the pictures to the map. Students will present their maps to others.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Students will be placed in teams throughout the lesson.

Assessment Plan

Students will assessed on their created map of the school grounds using a rubric.
