Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to complete a project that involves setting up a Community Emergency Preparedness Plan in several neighborhoods in the community. The students will learn through service learning by mapping neighborhoods in the community. Students will gain knowledge of: Global Positioning System (GPS) units for setting waypoints, Arc View- a Geographical Information Systems (GIS) mapping software. With these programs the students will be able to make a variety of maps.

Instructional Procedures

1. The teacher will give an introduction to GIS/GPS. -Activities will follow using the GPS units (ex. marking and finding waypoints, receiving satellite reception...) 2. Students will apply what they learned about using the GPS units by marking waypoints of the neighborhoods. 3. After the data is collected, the teacher will give a lesson on using Arc View. 4. Students will then enter points into Arc View. 5. Once the points are entered, the groups will label the homes and districts in the neighborhoods. 6.The maps will be printed and presented to the Community Leaders.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Gifted Child-Take pictures of homes and insert into map. Be organizer of information. Struggling Child-Work with partner and limit amount of information to be collected and entered. Special Needs-Work with a partner and find a strength of theirs and use it.

Extensions
