Summary

This will be a lesson on dividing 1-digit divisors using the Educreations app

Materials

  • an iPad mirrored to a projector
  • a video using Educreation about division
  • an infographic showing the division algorithm

Background for Teachers

Teachers need to be aware of the 5th grade core curriculum for division

    Student Prior Knowledge

      Students should know the following:
    • meaning of divisor, dividend, quotient
    • basic math facts
    • dividing by multiples of ten
    • estimating quotients

    Intended Learning Outcomes

5.NBT.6 Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.

    Instructional Procedures

    • show video and infographic on division using Educreation
    • have students do guided practice problems as a group
    • break into small groups with an iPad at each table
    • provide practice problems
    • circulate around to each group
    • if intervention is needed, have students watch video again

    Strategies for Diverse Learners

Show the video of several of the independent practice problems. Check answers using the step by step video of each problem pausing it when necessary.

    Extensions

If there is time, and this is really what I think makes this app so great, have each student make their own video of themselves working a problem and have them play it back to see if it make sense. Talk about kids being engaged!

There is a Quick Check Master from enVisionMATH that has three problems. The first two are worth 1 point each and the third problem is scored based on student sample answers that are worth 1 to 3 points. If students score 0-3 points, intervention and reteaching will be explored.
