Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will understand why using the correct order of operations is essential in mathematics, and be able to use order of operations correctly.

Instructional Procedures

(all materials mentioned are on the materials website) Lesson begins with large-group pre-assessment via smartboard "Variables and Expressions." Teacher then presents powerpoint lesson order_of_operations.ppt to large group, being sure to clarify any misunderstanding that occurred in the pre-assessment. The web sites from the resource page may also be used. Students then complete the exproderofopergame.pdf and/or orderofoperpuzzle.pdf in small groups. Individual homework is hworderofoperations.pdf.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

struggling students may use sgorderoperations.pdf for homework. Gifted students may complete the journal prompt.

Extensions

quotableorderofoper.pdf and fourfours.pdf Also, a video of the lesson is downloadable and may be posted on the class website for review by students outside the classroom.
