Instructional Procedures

LAUNCH: A bakery has cakes shaped as rectangles and pies shaped as circles. Show the different ways to cut the desserts into equal parts.

EXPLORE: Hand out outlines of cakes and pies. Have students demonstrate ways to cut their cakes and pies into equal parts.

DISCUSS:

  • What makes that equal?
  • If I chose on of those pieces, would you care which piece I took?
  • Are there any other ways to divide this shape equally?

ADDITIONAL TASK: People coming into the bakery can order a piece of dessert. They can order halves, fourths, or quarters of the dessert. Show the different ways the desserts can be divided.
