Counting on is an interactive math lesson involving the Smart board. During this lesson students practice keeping a part of an addition equation in their head and counting on from that number.
Smart Board Koosh Ball
Students need to have number sense. Students need to be familiar with the concept of addition.
Students will become more familiar with addition equations, their parts, the whole. They will learn to count on from the larger part to get the whole.
Students will take turns throwing the Koosh ball at the dice on the smart board. They will be instructed to keep the larger number in their head and count on using the die with the dots on it. To extend the lesson use the dice with just the numbers and not the dots.
To add a kinesthetic aspect to the lesson have the students stand up and pretend to hold each part in their hand. For example 2+3. Have them say the equation and do a jumping jack to say the whole representing the top of a math mountain which would be 5 in this equation.
Observe students while playing the interactive game and check for knowledge.
