Summary

Gobstoppers in hot and cold water. Predict what will happen and conduct the experiment.


Materials

  • 1000 ml beakers (smaller beakers and water amounts can be used)
  • 4 gobstopppers
  • cold and hot water
  • stop watches
  • ice
  • worksheet


Background for Teachers

If you use a hot plate for the hot water you will need to take precautions. Hot water from the tap works well.


Instructional Procedures

  1. Take a large jaw breaker and start licking it in front of the class. Ask the class if there is a different way to dissolve the jaw breaker.
  2. Set up a bin with ice water.
  3. Have a source for hot water.
  4. Students will run the lab.
  5. Discuss after the results.
