Summary

Students will create a comparison chart showing similarities and differences between chemical and physical properties.

Instructional Procedures

  1. Explain to students that they will first use their books to identify characteristics of chemical and physical properties. They will write these in the table provided.
  2. After filling in their tables, students should fill in the Venn Diagram below it. They should find at least 2 similarities. Differences will be easier.
  3. Write the following examples of properties on the board and have students place them in the Venn diagram also:
    1. has color
    2. bubbles in water
    3. rusts
    4. has shape
    5. has mass
    6. burns
    7. hard
    8. melts
    9. flexible

Scoring Guide:
1. Student identifies 4 characteristics of chemical and physical properties….4 pts
2. Student identifies 2 similarities…………………….4 pts
3. Student correctly places examples in correct circle on Venn diagram…….4 pts
