Summary

Students will use modeling clay to form Earth features found in sedimentary rock.

Materials

Attachments

  • clay (4 colors)
  • wax paper or a surface to work on
  • plastic knife
  • student sheet (attached)

Instructional Procedures

  1. Read the introduction with students.
  2. Make sure all students can draw the stratigraphy of the rock type. Some students may notice that the limestone is imbedded in a layer of shale but four layers is enough.
  3. Hand out clay and read the first set of directions so students understand they are making a large block and cutting it into four parts, each of which they will then experiment on.
  4. Allow time for students to finish. If they are stumped by #5, you might suggest an asteroid impact or volcano or uplift from below.
