Time Frame
1 class periods of 60 minutes each
Summary
Students will use modeling clay to form Earth features found in sedimentary rock.
Materials
- clay (4 colors)
- wax paper or a surface to work on
- plastic knife
- student sheet (attached)
Instructional Procedures
- Read the introduction with students.
- Make sure all students can draw the stratigraphy of the rock type. Some students may notice that the limestone is imbedded in a layer of shale but four layers is enough.
- Hand out clay and read the first set of directions so students understand they are making a large block and cutting it into four parts, each of which they will then experiment on.
- Allow time for students to finish. If they are stumped by #5, you might suggest an asteroid impact or volcano or uplift from below.
