Summary

In this activity, students will examine the force exerted on objects by gravity. They will use a falling object to understand that gravity pulls objects toward Earth's center.

Materials

  • embroidery hoops
  • fruit drink bottle with wide mouth
  • metal nuts
  • student worksheet (attached)

Instructional Procedures

  1. Have a student demonstrate the removal of the embroidery hoop from the top of the jar by quickly pulling it away. Done properly, the nut will fall into the jar. Discuss gravity and the forces involved in the movement of a falling object.
  2. Challenge the students to stack the nuts and see who could get the most into the jar in a single pull. Have students write their results on the board.
  3. Provide time for the students to answer the analysis questions.
