Utah Counties

Summary

This will be a project for the 4th grade classes. The students will be researching information regarding each county in Utah.

Materials

Computer with internet access

Background for Teachers

Teachers will need to familiarize themselves with the Counties of Utah link found in Pioneer Online Library. Teachers will also need to be familiar with the infographic creator found on easel.ly.com and how to create a quiz using kahoot found at getkahoot.com

Student Prior Knowledge

Students will need to have some knowledge about using a computer. It would be good if they were familiar with copying photos and saving them.

Intended Learning Outcomes

The students will become very familiar with the counties of Utah. Through both their own study of the their specific county and having all the students present their research.

Instructional Procedures

The first step will be to have the students create a folder on their desktop that is to be used for saving photos they find. Each student will be directed to go to Pioneer Online Library and then clicking on the "Counties of Utah" link. They will need to scroll down until they locate the link called "Utah History for Kids". This link will be helpful as they will find more specific information for their project. At this location the students will locate their county and begin researching the information specific to their county. The requirements of their research would be to find one item from each of the purple colored links. This would include photos and written information. This will likely take two class sessions. Once this information has been gathered the teacher will need to introduce the infographic creator at easel.ly.com. The students will be allowed to create their infographic using the pictures that they have saved. This will be more a pictorial presentation of their county than a written product. This will take another two class periods. On the fifth class period the teacher will have the students print their infographics and practice presenting. There may only be time for a few presenters. After all the students have presented the teacher will need to have created a quiz using the kahoot site. This can be as easy or difficult as the teacher deems necessary. This could easily blend with the regular teaching being done in class in regards to Utah history.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Assistance will be needed to support those students that are not familiar with the computer applications.

The assessment of this project will be the use of the getkahoot.com application.
