Summary

Exciting and fast paced volleyball activity.

Materials

A volleyball net and volleyballs.

Background for Teachers

Knowledge of volleyball skills to teach before activity.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students should know how to serve, bump/pass, block, set, spike and how to rotate and set-up position on the court quickly.

Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will showcase their abilities in an active volleyball setting. They will use locomotor movements as well as manipulative skills and implement these in a culminating manner.

Instructional Procedures

Let's play volleyball:

  • Divide the class into three teams. Two teams will be on the court, with the other team standing off to one side.
  • When a sideout occurs, the winners stay on the court, rotating to the service side if necessary, while the unsuccessful team rotates out.
  • The service team, when ready, may serve at any time. If the other team isn't ready then they will be the next time.
  • You may use any number of players on the court at any one time.

Strategies for Diverse Learners

Make team size according to abilities. More players on the court results in limited amount of opportunities. It also means that there will be less space to cover.

A larger ball that "floats" a little more also helps students properly position themselves underneath the ball.
