Core Standards of the Course

Strand 1
Students will receive an orientation to the cosmetology trade.

Standard 1
Explain the history of cosmetology and the occupational opportunities.

Standard 2
Discuss life skills as they pertain to ethics, managing time, study habits, and having a positive attitude.

Standard 3
Demonstrate the professional image that is expected in the cosmetology industry.

Standard 4
Demonstrate effective communication skills when dealing with clients.


Strand 2
Students will be able to understand and demonstrate the science of cosmetology.

Standard 1
Describe bacteriology.

Standard 2
Discuss infection control and demonstrate safe work practices.

Standard 3
Identify the principal tools, implements, equipment, and their parts used in the practice of cosmetology.

Standard 4
Explain the importance of anatomy and physiology to the cosmetology trade.

Standard 5
Explain the importance of chemistry for cosmetologists.

Standard 6
Understand the basics of electricity and light therapy and their safe use.

Standard 7
Describe the properties and disorders of the skin and nails.

Standard 8
Describe the properties and disorders of the hair and scalp.


Strand 3
Students will be able to understand and demonstrate proper hair care techniques.

Standard 1
Demonstrate proper treatment of the hair and scalp.

Standard 2
Demonstrate proper principles of hair design.

Standard 3
Understand and demonstrate proper shampooing, rinsing, and conditioning techniques.

Standard 4
Demonstrate principles of haircutting.

Standard 5
Demonstrate principles of hairstyling.

Standard 6
Demonstrate principles of braiding and braid extensions.

Standard 7
Identify wigs and hair enhancements.

Standard 8
Demonstrate chemical texture services.

Standard 9
Demonstrate proper haircoloring techniques.


Strand 4
Students will be able to understand and demonstrate the proper skin care techniques.

Standard 1
Identify skin disorders and the anatomy of the skin.

Standard 2
Demonstrate and understanding hair removal methods.

Standard 3
Identify the appropriate products and techniques used in skin care and demonstrate the procedure for a basic facial.

Standard 4
Describe the different types of cosmetics and their uses.


Strand 5
Students will be able to understand and demonstrate the proper nail care techniques.

Standard 1
Describe the structure and composition of nails and how a nail grows.

Standard 2
Demonstrate an understanding of manicuring and pedicuring.

Standard 3
Demonstrate an understanding of advanced nail techniques.


Strand 6
Students will be able to understand and demonstrate the business of cosmetology.

Standard 1
Understand and demonstrate what it requires to operate a cosmetology business.

Standard 2
Demonstrate and understanding of what it take to prepare for a career in the cosmetology industry.

Standard 3
Prepare for the state board and licensing laws examination.
