Lesson Plans
Standard 1
Students will understand that all matter in the universe has a common origin and is made of atoms, which have structure and can be systematically arranged on the periodic table.
Objective 3
Correlate atomic structure and the physical and chemical properties of an element to the position of the element on the periodic table.
  • Alkali Metals Demonstration for Periodic Trends
Students will watch a demonstration of the reaction of alkali metals in water.
  • Building the Periodic Table from Scratch
Students will use the properties of elements to create a periodic table.
  • Cartoon Chemistry
Students will compare characteristics of groups of elements on the periodic table. They will create a cartoon for a typical element of one group.
  • History of the Atom Group Project
Students will research a chemist and make a class presentation that includes a poster and worksheet.
  • Isotopes of Pennies
Students use pre-1982 pennies and post-1982 pennies construct the concept of isotopes and weighted averages of elements.
  • Periodic Table Classroom
Students will discover the complexity and correlations of the periodic table by creating their own periodic table in the form of a seating chart, using information about classmates
  • Periodic Table Model
Students will use “element” cards to organize into a periodic table, using the symbols on the card.
  • Periodicity Board Games
Students will create board games and then play each others' games. The games will address major concepts related to Periodicity.
  • Primo Levi and the Periodic Table
Students will read an article, summarize it, and then answer questions about it.
