The Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN) Board voted unanimously to restore access to Utah K12 EBSCO on Friday, October 19, 2018.
The UETN board decision followed public comments at the meeting and written responses received by board members and UETN staff. The UETN Board took into consideration the Utah State Board of Education's 8-to-6 vote on October 3 supporting restoration of access with additional filtering to block inappropriate material. The UETN decision will also reestablish the Utah Online Library Committee to provide ongoing input on Utah's Online Library content and other issues.
K12 EBSCO to Remain Unavailable
UETN board voted Monday (10-1-2018) to continue to restrict access to EBSCO K12 services pending additional discussion and investigation
EBSCO services will remain unavailable to K12 education for the immediate future pending additional discussion and investigation of EBSCO and all other similar periodical services provided by UEN to public education students. We take our responsibility to administer the state’s educational technology and telehealth network very seriously and will continue to work with those we serve and our vendors. EBSCO K-12 Content Unavailable
Ongoing concerns about content prompted action. The Utah Education and Telehealth Network (UETN) places a high priority on the safety and well-being of students and is taking additional action to address concerns about inappropriate content within EBSCO services for K12 students.
“The EBSCO databases for K12 students will be unavailable until further notice,” said UETN Chief Operating Officer Laura Hunter. “We realize the K12 students we serve need ongoing library access for homework and our most popular K12 services including CultureGrams, World Book and the Gale Reference Library will not be affected. EBSCO for higher education and public libraries will remain accessible."
