Background for Teachers

The teacher must know how to use the Smartboard and to pull lessons from Smartboard Exchange.

Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to know how to count to 50. Students need to know how to count objects or manipulatives up to 50. Students need to be able to count on from a given number. Students need to know how to make a triangle.

Intended Learning Outcomes

After this lesson, students will understand what fact families are. They will also be able to use Math Mountains to come up with the missing numbers in fact families.

Instructional Procedures

  1. text
  2. Teacher will model fact families by using manipulatives. Example: 2 + 3 = 5, 3 + 2 = 5, 5 - 3 = 2, 5 - 2 = 3.
  3. The class (with teacher direction) will make fact families using manipulatives.
  4. Teacher will demonstrate how to represent Fact Families using Math Mountains.
  5. Students will represent Fact Families using Math Mountains on their individual White Boards.
  6. Class will do a Smartboard activity from Smart Exchange. (Fact Families, Grade K, 1, &2))
  7. Class will do Smartboard Activity (Fact Family Vortex) found on Smart Exchange.
  8. Students will work in pairs to do fact families. One student will draw a Math Mountain with all numbers and the other will create with manipulatives.
  9. Students will work in pairs. One student will draw a Math Mountain and leave one part or the total blank. The other student will fill in the missing number.
  10. Students will work in pairs. One student will draw a Math Mountain and leave one part or the total blank. The other student will fill in the missing number.

Extensions

Students will create story problems using Fact Families.

Assessment Plan
