Student Prior Knowledge

Students need to be familiar with basic writing skills and recognize parts of speech.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students should be able to create an opinion-based and informational-based document using one to three well-formed paragraphs supported by sources.


Instructional Procedures

The procedure will be to focus on different skill element each day. The students will not master the task after one experience, this is a process you will use with each writing. Five day procedure:

  1. Introduce writing goals (What are you writing - opinion, informational, etc.)
  2. Identify the two elements of writing the lesson plans discuss how these steps will help through the writing experience.
  3. Element One is structure - instruct student's to use a graphic organizer to assist with the structure of the paper.
  4. Paragraph organization
  5. Graphic organizer (hamburger, or any graphic organizer that identifies topic sentence, details and closing sentence. Using a graphic organizer helps organize thoughts and helps with word choice
  6. Element Two is Word Selection
  7. Write - Prewriting & drafting
  8. Expand word choice (demonstrate Thesaurus and Dictionary use)
  9. Edit with COPS (Capitalization, Organization, Punctuation, and Spelling)
  10. Revising
  11. Review - Proofreading
  12. Publish
  13. Using a Powerpoint or Smartboard presentation to demonstrate steps and daily task
    • First lesson - informational
      Second lesson - opinion
      Third lesson - review and practice
    Explain that each style of writing requires well written paragraphs.


    Strategies for Diverse Learners

    Students will have opportunities to practice in many different elements and levels of writing to enhance their development.


    Extensions

    Creating additional paragraphs documents for essays expressing opinion and argument and instructional text


    Assessment Plan

    Assessment will include two elements: 1. A brief evaluation of the parts of a paragraph, punctuation, capitalization, and sources to find information. 2. Through three writing samples using the criteria demonstrated in instruction with rubric and self-assessment using a check list.
