Student Prior Knowledge

Students will need to know how to:

  • Follow classroom procedures
  • Read and work with partners
  • Fill out a graphic organizer
  • Cut and paste


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to decode, read, and comprehend written text. Students will also be able to identify and describe the cause and effect of events in written text.


Instructional Procedures

    Day 1
  • Talk about the meaning of Cause and Effect (definition, examples).
  • Read Aloud- "If you give a Mouse a Cookie" and discuss cause and effect of events from the book.
  • Kids work individually to cut out cause and effect slips and match the cause with the effect. Discuss answers as a class.
  • Day 2
  • Review cause and effect meaning from previous lesson.
  • Read one of the "If you give a ____" books in groups of 2-3, and complete Cause and Effect graphic organizer.


Assessment Plan

Understanding of cause and effect during class discussions and group work. Ability to complete the cause and effect matching assignment ("Cause and Effect Detectives") correctly and independently.
