Summary

Materials

Metric sticks.


Background for Teachers

Teachers need to know the basic metric system and how you convert from a meter to a kilometer and a meter to a centimeter.


Student Prior Knowledge

Students should be familiar with how to use a ruler and be aware of different sizes of objects.


Intended Learning Outcomes

Students will be able to convert and understand metric units of length.


Instructional Procedures

  • Hand out metric sticks.
  • Have students examine and look at a metric stick
  • Explain to the students what the different lines on the metric stick mean.
  • Talk about with the students the difference in the different measurements
  • Make a chart together of the different measurements.
  • Put problems on the board.
  • Solve 2 together.
  • Release responsibility.


    Strategies for Diverse Learners

    • Write the words on the board and say them as a class together.
    • Repeat together.

      • Assessment Plan

        Have an exit stick of a picture of a metric stick and they have to label the different lines.
